Within this political cartoon one can clearly see how deeply rooted the anti-war movement was within the American society. The counterculture hippies, depicted in this cartoon as the protesters, became popular at the beginning of the sixties after a decade of conformity in the fifties. These hippies were stereo typically people from younger generation, teenagers and college students. Not only did they reject cultural norms but they started mass movements such as the women’s rights movement and the anti-war movement. These protesters age is critical as most of the soldiers being drafted were young men, usually just out of high school. By protesting the war and having draft riots these young men make a statement; the Americans being sent overseas did not want to fight nor did they support the Vietnam War. Withdrawing support greatly impacted the outcome of the war; draftees would take refuge in Canada, college students held riots, and the returning Vietnam soldiers were treated rudely, without respect. This political cartoon represents all this; the people did not approve of this war and they wanted it to end.
